Global Issues:

Dioxin - Human and environmental contamination

Dioxin is considered as the most toxic substance. Because of it’s lipophilicity and strongly binding to aryl hydrocarbons receptor (Arh) can affect human beings even in low concentrations.

Human beings exposure to dioxin through working in industries (production of pesticides involve chlorine, production of polyvinyl chloride plastics) as well as through incineration of chlorinated waste, paper mills which use chlorine bleaching and through the food chain.

Dioxin is considered as a Class 1 carcinogen, which means that is a “known human carcinogen”.

Data on lab animals show that dioxin can cause health problems such as skin abnormalities, immune system toxicity, sperm loss and endomitriosis, diabetes, decreasing of male sex hormone, chloracne, endocrine disturbances and even death.

Symptoms and signs of human exposure to dioxin include headaches, skin disorders, nervous system disturbances, psychiatric problems, muscle aches and digestive system disorders.

Is dioxin highly toxic in human beings as it is in lab animals?

Is dioxin a health treat to human beings? What do the scientific studies show?

Are any scientific data about residues of dioxin in food, water, air or soil?

Are any scientific data about dioxin toxicokinetic in environment (air, water, and soil)?

How can people protect themselves?

Can consumers minimize their exposure to dioxin through food?

These are some questions that have to be answered in order to avoid human and environmental contamination.

I look forward to receiving scientific data of Global NEST member’s researches as well as your opinion of how Global NEST can contribute to the problem of Dioxin and Environmental Contamination.
